This vase started with an embossing plate I made using ferns from my yard. I pressed the ferns into fresh clay and then allowed the form to dry slowly over several weeks. It was then bisque fired and ready to become the plate to press fresh clay into.
After texturing the clay, I formed it into the cylinder shape and added the bottom. Once bone dry, I added the underglaze wash and then wiped it back to reveal the detailed fern patterns below. After the first firing I dipped the vase in a clear glaze that adds a little pull to the underglaze. There is some crazing in this glaze due to its glassiness but it does not affect the integrity of the vessel.
Vase measurements: 9 inches tall by 3.5 inches at the base and the opening.
